It's a SUPERCast! Get it? 502 Heroes and 3 podcasts? OK, I know corny, but we're still doing this thing. Starting with Animation Destination we begin the SUPERCast with the anime segment, then Video Destruct talks about the game segment, then finally, Nerd Brand takes a look at the holistic approach of a Marketing Crossover Strategy: Video Games and Anime.

A Marketing crossover strategy is branding marketing combined with different products or brands in the industry. And which bring different user experience to consumers.

There are times when it is done well. And a lot of times not done well. Crossover marketing is a risky endeavor. In this episode we discuss the winner and losers of this venture between Animation Destination, Nerd Brand and Video Destruct podcasts in one single SUPERCast!

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) cannot be effective without well-executed content. And that’s where social media marketing kicks in. SEO and SMM (Social Media Marketing) go together like peas and carrots.

Social Media Marketing helps you to get your content seen, which in turn can substantially increase your number of brand mentions on the web. Today marketers today are calling it “top of mind.” Which is the new way to say, “brand awareness.”

The better you promote your content across marketing channels, the more referring domains you will receive.

This week on Nerd Brand we are talking about resurrecting brands. Taking a brand that has been either on fumes or dead can be a huge challenge. Some don't even bother attempting it, most rather start fresh. A while back I was told that it's better to raise a baby than to raise the dead. Starting fresh allows more room to grow and redefine your brands message and mission.

Below is a brief synopsis of the show:

What the tip?

Don't be evil. Cheating Google is not cool. I was asked how to leverage how search works to manipulate the market. Honest question that was not aware that it's manipulation and not cool with Google. Thus evil.

Nerd Segment

1996 - Marvel is bankrupt and sells characters to pay bills. Sony got Spiderman, and Fox got X-Men.

late 2000's - Feige at Marvel tries to get Sony and Fox to easter egg Dr. Strange and Ironman to begin resurrecting Marvel.

2008 - Ironman was released.

2010 - Spiderman was cooked, and X-Men was confusing.

2017 - tables have turned, and Marvel is helping Sony resurrect Spiderman. Fox does X-men Day's of Future Past to correct franchise.

Brand Segment

It's easier to raise a baby than to raise the dead.

Having said that, it is rare to see happen.

You can read here about 10 brands that made a return: https://www.ama.org/publications/eNewsletters/Marketing-News-Weekly/Pages/10-brands-that-came-back-from-the-dead.aspx

Diversification is defined as: "A growth strategy where a business markets new products in new markets."

But it is a risky strategy. The business is moving into a new area of a market in which it has little or no experience. Here we discuss how the video game industry did this.

Movies are a business just like any other one. This episode of our podcast we're talking about print and digital advertising that wasn't quite thought out. A few weeks ago, the new Spiderman movie poster was revealed. This was criticized as a minor disaster. The project has been memed, and trolled on social media. Terrible structure: Better:

We talk about how things like this could happen. Was it design by committee? Was it the artists purposefully doing it to achieve an era of design, but for the wrong audience? We'll let you decide. What's more important, creating art or creating promos that sell the offer or event? Like and follow us on Facebook.com/thenerdbrand or at nerdbrandpodcast.com. Comic books were more or less invented in 1933 by Maxwell Charles Gaines, a former elementary school principal
Due to negative PR of comics, Gaines, in 1940, hired Marston as a consultant.
In the summer of 1940, Olive Richard, a staff writer for the magazine, visited Marston at his house in Rye, New York, to ask him for his expert opinion about comics.
“Olive Richard” was the pen name of Olive Byrne, and she hadn’t gone to visit Marston—she lived with him. She was also the niece of Margaret Sanger, one of the most important feminists of the 20th century.
These are kinky people:
Olive Byrne met Marston in 1925, when she was a senior at Tufts; he was her psychology professor. Marston was already married, to a lawyer named Elizabeth Holloway. When Marston and Byrne fell in love, he gave Holloway a choice: either Byrne could live with them, or he would leave her.
Her Purpose
Wonder Woman made her debut in All-Star Comics at the end of 1941 and on the cover of a new comic book, Sensation Comics, at the beginning of 1942, drawn by an artist named Harry G. Peter. She wore a golden tiara, a red bustier, blue underpants and knee-high, red leather boots. She was a little slinky; she was very kinky. She’d left Paradise to fight fascism with feminism, in “America, the last citadel of democracy, and of equal rights for women!”

Brandon has this one covered.
Time to do a brand review. Check your self before you advertise yourself. Inconsistent branding communicates the wrong message. Get every print piece and print out digital ones and lay on table and LOOK at what you have. Confusing and Misleading representation could result in a damaging brand reputation.
Things to check:
  • Logo
  • Colors
  • Website
  • Copy used on digital and print items
  • Social Media Channels

What music can say about a brand.
"Music brings value to a brand in three ways: identity, engagement, currency. Specifically, using music to establish an emotional connection with a brand, increases brand recognition, creates excitement and buzz beyond the brand’s core products or services, and can empower consumers, giving them valuable content to discover and share. Music creates the value that brands need to win the war for attention and develop a genuine connection with their consumers. When used correctly, music not only creates loyalty, but true advocacy."

It's all about knowing your audience. A few weeks ago on Nerd Brand we talked about Marvel Comics and how they're taking their narratives in a specific direction that wasn't exactly a fit for the audience that consumes the product. As of a couple weeks ago the CEO of Marvel comics admitted this mistake and we will have to wait and see if there's a course correction. But there's the proof of not knowing your audience and marginalizing a good segment of them and sales suffering as a result. So don't forget your audience.

Nerd Segment

R rated comic movies, the good list and the ones that were too far ahead of their time. As well as a short list of movies rumored and in talks for production that could be R rated.

  • Deadpool - 138 million, over 500 million world wide ticket sales, out grossing Passion of the Christ.
  • Logan - costs studio 127 million, projected to make close to $300 million.
  • Dredd - wasn't successful but darn good.
  • Blade 1, 3

Movies that should/could be R rated?

  • Spawn
  • Lobo
  • Venom
  • The Batman
  • Justice League Dark

Brand Segment

Brand marketing is interpreted by the people that view it and I can be viewed negatively or positively examples of brands viewed positively and examples of brands viewed negatively.

YouTube - privacy settings required for videos that shouldn't be privatized. Basically if you cuss you're channel is only viewable by logged in users and is up for debate if ads are run on it. Unless you're like minded to Liberal YouTube corp.

Questions for discussion:

Financial interests of social channels - where is the line that you don't cross? How can you know what's offensive? Or should you just say dammit all and let your nerd fly?

Is advertising to appeal to everyone not possible these days and why?

Reference HubSpot marketers who cuss post. This is why YouTube de-monotizes YouTubers. But also non-like minded YouTube channels.

How nerd culture has responded, or even cares?

In this episode of Nerd Brand Podcast we talk about Brands that you have heard of that are no longer with us and some that are soon to be departed. Many Brands die because of financial reasons, others because of a lack of self promotion, in spite of having "Top of Mind" awareness.

To not leave on a negative note:
We also talk about the 2007-08 writers strike where Hollywood elite learned the hard way that content is king, but not all content is not equal.

Be Consistent!
Consequences with inconsistency in marketing message and appearances
  1. Lose a customers trust
  2. Being associated with poor quality
Questions to ask:
  1. Which social channels are being used most frequently?
  2. What percentage are using mobile devices to access your content?
  3. What type of content would your audience enjoy?
  4. Does your audience prefer to receive emails, phone calls, texts, attend webinars, etc.?
  5. How do they speak to each other?

Marvel Comcis vs MCU
Marvel Comics is not doing well. A singular ideology has created an economic problem for Marvel Comics.
Example: DCCU is based on spectacle. MCU is consistent and focuses on story.
Gimmick #1 - The politics
Quality of story over agenda. Build a following by creating new stories and pay attention to your readers. Don't let a few dictate direction of your product. Editors don't let writers breathe but some writers are not focused on story.
Gimmick #2 - The nostalgia
Marvel is doing what movies do, reboot and remake because sales are falling. Another civil war, secret wars and character changes that have bad stories like female Thor and sjw character and story lines.
Event to event and number ones to ones for money. Consumers are rejecting the lack of quality because Marvel has placed the opinion of the few first and money.
Data driven efforts.
Do nothing until you get the facts. When marketing a product do the research and focus groups. 1 opinion is not enough to change direction.
Examples of where this happens:
  • Websites
  • Creative print
Overall strategy of your product or presentation.
